Cinematography- analysis task
1) Write an analysis of the cinematography in the opening sequence. Highlight your use of media language and try to cover camera shots, angles and movement using the terminology we have learned in lessons.
It begins with medium long shot on the trump family to represent the power and control that the story is trying demonstrate the "Carringtons" having. As well as a close up pan on the kardashian family which connotes that they not only have control and influence of the country but also in social media. It proceeds to show medium long shots on factories and engineering equipments and constructions which connote that they are trying to present them selves as a business that works from the bottom up and have been for years. The close up of the various inventions/ companies such as the gas station, phones/ technology, the toaster followed by a high angle view of the city show the various influence the "carringtons" have in the world successfully demonstrating power and control. The zoom in from a mid shot to a close up of Fallon Carrington from a low angle makes her look dominant, powerful and in control as well as showing her importance. Therefore the over the shoulder shot for the audience to see her point of view looking at the two men staring at her makes it seem like she is the threatening one rather that the one being intimidated by, what's stereotypically seen as, "dominant gender".
2) How does the camerawork give the audience clues about the setting, narrative and character?
The similarities of each frame and image shown by the camera movements creates a good depiction of what the character's personality and associations are. For example, close ups emphasize what or who they want the audience to focus on and what to understand from it. Long and wide shots show the entire scenery and setting which clearly the type of are the characters are from and used to, the caringtons live in a rich city with factories it shows they are rich and high class. Low angles on people show dominance and high angles show submissiveness but mid angles just shows them as the same level as the audience, not better or worse.. The careful choice on which angle to use on each character deeply effects how the audience views them.
Secondly, find and analyse one film or TV still image. Add the image to your blogpost.
3) Analyse the camera shot/angle in the image and what it communicates to the audience. Remember to highlight the media terminology you use.
Over the shoulder shot of the butler while he is watching Fallon (the girl) walk away. This can also be seen as a POV shot, showing the audience the awkward position he is in as Fallon disobeys his order in this scene.
The image also shows a medium long shot on the boy as he looks directly at the butler with a smug face after Fallon walks away. The shot makes it obvious of his body language and demeanor as unbothered which tells the audience that this behaviour is probably quite common for Fallon. The medium long shot of Fallon walking away shows clearly her start, middle and end of where she is going, therefore not raising any questions for the audience and no confusion to where she is going and what is happening. The mid angle of which the camera was placed successfully presents everything in the scene as well as portraying each emotion and body language of the 3 characters in the scene.
