Editing video: Learner response
1) Type up your feedback/comments from your teacher.
WWW: Effective mise-en-scene, Good soundtrack, Camera movement, match on action, use of dialogue, humorous, excellent plan
EBI: Audio levels on dialogue, More match on action
2) Type up your feedback from fellow students.
WWW: good transitions, good sound, good acting, editing good, flashback, sound choice, good montage
WWW: good transitions, good sound, good acting, editing good, flashback, sound choice, good montage
EBI: abrupt ending, sound levels, more match on action/ missed opportunities, framing, louder dialogue
3) Now reflect on your video. Did you meet the brief and successfully include the three key editing aspects we have learned?
I included the 3 key editing aspects, however, I wish I added in more. There were a lot of missed opportunities with my video to use various editing but we only filmed so much. Despite this I did meet the brief successfully but there is always better.
4) What were the strengths and weaknesses of your final film? Write a detailed analysis picking out specific shots, edits and any other aspect of film language you think is relevant.
The strengths of the final film was the range of camera movements successfully adding in to create a more live motion. The jump cuts, also creating a montage to show time passing effectively emphasizing the fact the 'elf' wasted time instead of making presents. Another strength is the little details in the acting; having the reindeer show little expressions when little scenes were happening shows the attention to detail in the filming and scenes. Another strength is the use of sounds, all non-diegetic as well as parallel to the scene; the sounds added onto the slight realism of a talk show.
The weaknesses is the lack of editing techniques used, or more so the opportunities to use them missed. If there were more match-on-action and other editing techniques the film could've been more pleasing to the eye and most possibly flowed more smoothly thus heightening the intended effect on the audience. Another weakness is the random switch from OTS shot to a POV shot, despite it being purposeful it could have been confusing to the audience, creating a distorted effect which isn't what was intended, therefore creating a different interpretation of the film.
5) Learner response: what aspect of editing did you find most difficult? What have you learned from this process that will help you when you start the actual coursework later this year?
I found making the sound smooth and the volume all 'perfect' the most difficult. It was either too loud or too low or started to suddenly or ended too suddenly. I have tried the fading in and out and i think i have gotten the hang of it. From the process i've learnt that one scene can be filmed many times from different angles and shown in all the different angles whilst still looking like a one scene just fro the audience to see everything in full detail without them consciously noticing.
