Preliminary blog task

Now complete the following tasks:

1) State the song you have chosen for your preliminary exercise.

LOSER - Mckenna Grace

2) Choose at least three music videos similar to your concept and watch a clip or more from each. Make bullet-point notes on everything you watch, commenting on camerawork, editing and mise-en-scene.

Tiktok 1 (link)
  • Camerawork: Pan to a high angle, many medium long shots, no close ups
  • Editing: Cuts going along with the beat
  • Mise-en-scene: Casual/ comfortable clothing, dim/ low-key lighting, outside in an alleyway/ inside an empty room, no make up, 'play'/ toy props.
Tiktok 2 (link)
  • Camerawork:  Close ups, medium shots, long shots
  • Editing: Cuts along with the beats, match on action
  • Mise-en-scene: Silhouettes, low-key lighting, no make up, dancing, empty room, no props.
  • Camerawork:  Medium shots, long shots, close ups, high angle
  • Editing:  Cuts go along with the beat, match-on- action, jump cuts
  • Mise-en-scene:  A fancy prom dress, filler lights, Teenage dirtbag makeup, guitar, mic, in a prom ballroom

3) Write a short music video treatment for your extract (this is basically a script for your TikTok music video). You can find an example of a treatment here. If you are making your real coursework then feel free to use the treatment from your summer project.

A music video starting with 3 of the band members then transitioning into all 4 of the band members playing the song through match-on-action. Starting from the chorus of their song "LOSER". There will be personal scenes, public scenes (in a park) and many scenes done in the bathroom mirror which will all be shown through various post production cuts and edits throughout. The song will fade out with the girls saying "I can't wait till we're 18" then the video will fade out with a label going across the screen saying "LOSER out now".

4) Write a shot list containing EVERY shot you plan to film AND additional shots to create flexibility when editing (in a music video you will find you need FAR more shots than you think, particularly close-ups). These additional shots can be close-ups, alternative angles or something more creative. I advise using a simple table on Microsoft Word/Google Docs to set out your shot list - you can find an example here (this is from narrative film making but the same format can be used for any video project)

                                                                                SHOT LIST

5) Plan your mise-en-scene: what iconography are you including to ensure your audience understands the genre and style of your artist? Plan your settings, costume, make-up, props and lighting.
  • Setting:  Neighbourhood/ street, Park setting.
  • Costume: comfortable clothes, teenage dirt bag clothes.
  • Make-up: No makeup or casual/ natural make-up
  • Props: Pen, paper, guitar, mic, drums, food
  • Lighting: Natural lighting, filler lights

6) Plan a shooting schedule that will ensure everything is filmed by the deadline. Include when, where, who is required, planned equipment and any other aspects you need to arrange.
