Clueless review
I really enjoyed this movie because of its humour and teenage girl concept. Cher is truly an ideal protagonist as she represent whit, and 'cluelessness' which both reinforces and subverts 'dumb' blonde girl stereotypes. I appreciated the concept of her being a popular girl but rather a nicer one with good intentions even though the majority of her actions only reflected her selfish desires, such as, seeing the new girl as a 'project' rather than a person, nevertheless she still helped her. The movie succeeded in showing a teenage girl life still keeping the unrealistic rich representation rather than the average high school representation which fits in well for the movie's diversion element rather than just a personal identity one. Despite it being obvious for rich people living in Beverly hills, in my onion is really represented how the 90's is typically presented as in the media, with the fashion sense in the boys typically rather than the girls. The movie successfully fulfilled chick flick conventions but whilst still keeping a male audience engaged with the comedy and the story line, which helps the chic flick genre become more mainstream rather than a women's only theme leaving men bored. The cinematography of the movie throughout was also very effective; my favourite scene was near the end when Cher was sitting at the steps after one of her dad's workers stormed out. The establishing shot, I fee, reflects not only how Cher was feeling in the moment (small and ashamed) but also reflects the weight of the situation that just happened. It is very clear that the directors and cameramen of the film carefully and effectively decided which angles and movements to do in order to create strong feelings from such a simple movie from the audience.
